# Meetings with Notetaker

> Start a session, capture microphone and system audio, and return to saved meetings.

Notetaker keeps the conversation, generated insights, and your personal notes together. It is included in [Stenox 2.0](/pricing/overview).

## Start a session

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Notetaker">
    Open **Notetaker** in the main window. When idle, it shows session history. Choose **New session** for quick setup.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Prepare the session">
    Check the speech model and insights provider. Optionally select a calendar event, add reference files, or write Personal notes and preparation questions to guide insights. An excerpt of those notes goes to the selected insights provider. Speech follows the active dictation model; insights have their own selection.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start capture">
    Choose **Start session**. Grant Microphone and Screen & System Audio Recording access if prompted. Stenox prepares speech and speaker processing, opens the session tracker, and minimizes the main window.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Follow the conversation">
    Use **Conversation**, **Insights**, and **Personal notes** as the meeting progresses. Set or edit the title in the tracker. Wear headphones on calls to reduce duplicate microphone and system audio.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The default **Control–Option–M** shortcut starts or ends a session from another app. It can start directly without opening quick setup. Change it in **Settings → General**. Dictation and meeting capture are mutually exclusive.

<Note>
  Current session setup records **microphone + system audio** together. Stenox does not join a call as a bot or read participant names from the call app. Make sure participants understand that you are recording.
</Note>

## Pause, return, and finish

**Pause** stops both audio sources and commits queued speech. It retains the session, speaker names, and processing state. **Resume** continues the same recording clock without counting the pause. Preparation and finalization cannot be paused.

Closing the tracker window leaves capture running. Reopen Notetaker to return to it. The window can sit alongside another app; clicking that app does not end the session.

End the session with its stop control or the meeting shortcut. Stenox finishes pending transcription, performs a final insight review when enabled, and prepares refined notes when possible. A preparation or AI failure is shown in the session; review the status before assuming notes are complete.

## Find an earlier session

History searches titles, conversation, insights, personal notes, and extracted reference text. Double-click a row or press Return to open it. During active capture, an older session opens as a read-only snapshot; when idle, saved sessions are editable.

A paused session recovered after the app quits is saved as interrupted history. Recording cannot resume across app launches. Quitting normally waits for capture finalization and pending saves.
