# References and Ask Stenox

> Add readable documents, ask session questions, and inspect the cited evidence.

## Add reference documents

Open **References** in session setup or the tracker. Use **Add files** or drag files into the reference view. Supported files are **PDF, DOCX, PPTX, UTF-8 TXT, and Markdown**.

Each file is limited to 20 MB, 500 pages or slides, and 2 MB of extracted text. A batch accepts up to 20 files. Duplicate content is detected by its hash. You can preview, exclude, or remove an imported reference; removing it does not delete the original file.

Only readable text is extracted. Scanned pages, images, charts, and document layout are not interpreted. DOCX body text is stored as one section; PPTX text is split by slide. A scanned PDF needs a readable text layer before its content can help the session.

## What the AI receives

Included references are background context, distinct from evidence of what people said. Stenox uses full text when it fits the selected model's budget and otherwise chooses relevant page excerpts. The UI indicates partial coverage. A large model context window does not guarantee every document fits.

Excluded references are not included in future requests. Changes to included evidence invalidate stale replies and reset continued provider context where needed. They cannot retract text already sent to a cloud provider.

[Google Calendar context](/meetings/calendar) follows your selected insights provider, including a cloud provider. Calendar attachment links do not grant Stenox permission to download the files automatically; open them in your browser and add a downloaded file explicitly.

## Ask a question

Open **Ask Stenox** from the session. It appears beside a wide workspace and in a sheet in a narrow one. Ask about the conversation or included references, then follow the answer's source links to the passage or stored reference page.

Ask uses the same provider, model, account, and reasoning choice as Insights. Its input includes your question, session title, bounded selected conversation with speaker labels, included reference text, and up to three prior question/answer pairs. It does not independently add the full calendar event snapshot. The title, other inputs, or continued provider context can still contain Google-derived information. Read the coverage shown with the answer; it may not cover every part of a long meeting.

## Decide what to keep

An answer does not automatically change your notes. Choose **Save to personal notes** or **Add to insights** when you want to keep it. Otherwise it remains a question-and-answer result.

Ask does not independently add the Personal notes field to its request. A continued Codex or Claude Code session can contain notes from an earlier insight or refinement turn, so do not treat that omission as a privacy boundary or assume Ask has read your latest notes. Ask answers still require conversation or reference evidence.

Choosing **Save to personal notes** makes that text eligible for later insight and refinement requests. Saved AI text remains background, not evidence of an agreement. Review answers against their sources before turning them into commitments or sharing them.
